Glitter: A Charitable Night of Shopping in Saskatoon

posted by My Saskatoon    |   November 14, 2014 14:24

Local businesses coming together to support local charities and non-profit organizations- this concept is very close to our hearts at My Saskatoon. Through our sister site Give Back Saskatoon (stay tuned for the official launch!), our goal is to encourage the connections among local people, the Saskatoon business community, and the non-profits and charities that are working to create positive change in our city. The people of Saskatoon have such huge hearts, and we absolutely love it when local businesses take the initiative to host events that enable others to come together and get involved in supporting charities and non-profits in Saskatoon. Glitter, a charitable shopping event happening at The Mall at Lawson Heights, is doing just this.

On Tuesday, November 18 from 7-10pm, cross some items off your Christmas shopping list while enjoying great discounts, fun entertainment, food, and prizes. You must have a ticket to attend, and tickets are only available through participating registered non-profits in Saskatoon. Check out the extensive list of organizations here, and get your ticket by contacting the listed non-profit or charity that you most identify with. Tickets are $10 each and 100% of ticket proceeds stay with the organization. Entrance is limited to a specific number of ticket holders, so get yours soon!

Locally owned in Saskatoon, Believe Fit will be featuring a fun Old Hollywood theme, with great discounts, samples, and hourly giveaways. You’ll score an additional discount on winter accessories at locally owned Twisted Goods, in addition to a store-wide discount and refreshments. You can expect big discounts and a variety of contests, draws, and fun at many of the other stores in the mall. What a great way to support local non-profits in our city as you do your Christmas shopping!

Where to Find Trending Jewelry for 2015 in Saskatoon

posted by Elle    |   November 12, 2014 22:06

As the snow and chill set in, I feel like winter provides a perfect excuse for me to shop for a few additions to my wardrobe. I don’t know what it is, but I get a little extra pep in my step when I’m wearing jeans or a top that are new to me, even when they are second-hand. But sometimes the shopping process can be tiring, as all that trying-on usually wipes me out pretty quickly.

Thankfully, I’ve found that the same feeling of new-clothing exhilaration I was talking about can be achieved with something as small as a new pair of earrings. The same goes for any type of accessory really- hats, gloves, bags, shoes, but especially jewelry. Fashion is all about the extras, and fun jewelry details can take a basic outfit to the next level. Here are a few of the jewelry trends we are seeing this winter and into 2015.

Solo

I am loving one of the latest trends for this season, an earring in just one ear. I got my favourite solo earring at Back Then & Again, where you can find a nice selection of vintage earrings missing their match. Its the perfect way to rock this trend.

Mismatched

Minimalistic studs work well with the mismatched trend, with one stud worn alongside a more dramatic earring in the other ear. Twisted Goods has some unique, easily mixable studs from Jayu

Estate Earrings

If it looks borrowed from your Grandma, its a winner. If your Grandma isn’t willing to share, pay a visit to Stasia Boutique for bold consignment pieces, or Back Then & Again where vintage baubles abound.

Pendant Necklaces

The statement necklace trend is predicted to be outdone in 2015 by the classic pendant. Options by Trish recently released the gorgeous Timeless Pendant, which is designed and made here in Saskatoon by the talented Trish Hoffart.

Whether you’re looking for something vintage or second hand, locally crafted, or simply cute and unique, the locally owned shops in My Saskatoon's Accessories Category have got you covered. Enjoy shopping local this holiday season!

Haute Halloween

posted by Elle    |   October 29, 2014 14:31

While browsing online the other day, I came across the hashtag #hautehalloween. For those of you who are unsure, haute (pronounced ‘hote’) means “high” en français, and commonly describes something that is fashionably elegant. Images associated with this hashtag made me realize that the drama and mystery of Halloween can inspire visually stunning and unique style that is most (or only) fitting this time of year. So, I've put together a few of my favourite Halloween DIY ideas that I subjectively deem to be "haute", and not scary or gory.

I just love this eclectic little cluster of items, which totally bucks the typical black and orange.

This black cocktail adds a sophisticated, understated element to your Halloween party. The recipe is here

Matte black is all the rage right now, and transforms an orange plastic pumpkin into this ultra glam, whimsical home decor piece. The tutorial for the DIY is here.

If you're looking for an easy last-minute costume idea, this one is one of my favourites. Back Then & Again has some great jewelry pieces to pair with this look

I just love the look of these glossy black poison apples.

If you have a steady hand, let this lovely makeup look take centre stage and pair it with a simple beige or brown top for an easy and chic Halloween look.

I hope these ideas inspired you, as they did me. There's just something about these Halloween decor elements, party treats, and costume looks that I absolutely love. Enjoy your Halloween and all the fun and fantasy that comes along with it!

Fall Home Decor Trends

posted by My Saskatoon    |   October 24, 2014 22:56

We were browsing a few home decor blogs this week and just loved some of the styles that are showing up in popular fall 2014 designs. It seems that there is something trending right now for almost any taste, from the simple to the eclectic, and from brights to whites.

Here are a few of our faves.

White on White

In an airy home with lots of light, this look would be simply stunning. At Palliser Rooms EQ3 you can choose your fabric and colour to customize your new sofa to meld perfectly with other shades of white in a room.

Cork Flooring

Naturally shock absorbing and insulated, cork is soft and comfortable on your feet. Available at Floorit.ca on 51st, this trend is environmentally friendly and adds a beautiful, natural touch to a space with a minimalist vibe.

The Curated Look

This style gives you the freedom to simply display the things you love. With this look, the more whimsical and eclectic the better. Check out Twisted Goods for some great unique items to group together on your shelves or table tops.

High Contrast

This concept adds such a striking element to any room, and can be accomplished with furniture, art, or paint. One of the easiest ways is to introduce a deep wall colour that contrasts with the furniture and decor of a room. Exclusively in Saskatoon at Braid Flooring & Window Fashions, the Farrow & Ball paint line is perfect for rich colours.

Luxury Vinyl Plank

Durable and water resistant luxury vinyl plank flooring provides the sought-after look and feel of wood, but is child and pet friendly. Carpet Superstores carries a great selection of vinyl plank that has been created to have not only the look, but the feel of rustic boards with woodgrain, knots, and distresses.

A Gallery Wall

One of the most stylish ways to display your memories is with a cohesive gallery wall. Stop by J&S Picture Frame Warehouse with your favourite photos of your family, your travels, or a few art prints you love. Sherry and her staff will help you design and create a gallery wall that will become a beautiful conversation piece in your home.

We hope you'll take some inspiration from this little list. When it comes to home decor, the most important thing is that your space represents your personality and fits with your lifestyle. Stay true to what you really like and, in our opinion, you can't go wrong!

Fall Fitness in Saskatoon

posted by My Saskatoon    |   October 21, 2014 10:14

A change of season is a great opportunity to start something new. With autumn in full swing, for many of us the time is coming to make some adjustments to our physical activity routine. We’re still experiencing pretty much perfect weather right now, and I’m sure most of us are squeezing out every last drop. But as the chill inevitably comes upon us, slowly slipping out of reach are those warm evening jogs, the paddles on the river, the long bike rides.

For some of us, the impending snowfall is seen not as a hindrance, but more so an opportunity to enjoy the best outdoor activities of the year. For others, however, winter is a time to avoid the outdoors as much as possible, which of course means moving that fitness regime indoors. There are basically two options here: work out at home or join an indoor league, club, or gym.

Saskatoon has an untold number of awesome indoor recreation and fitness facilities that will keep you warm and active through winter. Locally owned Fitness Focus is one that is ramping up its offerings for Fall 2014. The group fitness classes are one of the major draws at Fitness Focus, with two new ones recently added to the comprehensive class calendar.

The first of the new classes this fall is PiYo Live. Its a low-impact, high-intensity workout that combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of Pilates with the strength and flexibility of yoga. Crank up the speed of the transitions and get your sweat, strength and stretch on with each workout.

Another addition is ZumbaR Step, the newest ZumbaR program. Tone and strengthen glutes and legs with a gravity-defying blend of Zumba routines and step aerobics. This will bring you maximum results without losing the classic easy-to-follow Zumba fitness-party.

With a wide variety of classes in yoga, step aerobics, core, spin, and much more, you’ll love the high energy and camaraderie of group workouts at Fitness Focus. There is, of course, also a great gym and cardio theatre if solo workouts are more your thing. And if you’d like some one-on-one assistance, the personal trainers at Fitness Focus are second to none. If you haven’t been in before, visit the Fitness Focus website for a free 2-week trial pass.

If you’re the hibernating type and would rather get your workout in the comfort of your own home, you can find pretty much anything you need at locally owned Fitness Solutions on Circle Drive.

Fitness Solutions brings in products from specialty fitness companies, and has everything from fitness accessories to complete workout systems and equipment. Stop by and chat with the knowledgeable staff about your fitness level, needs, and desires, and they will set you up with everything you need to achieve your goals.

One piece of equipment that caught our eye in the store recently is the VersaClimber, which provides a crazy awesome workout in the least amount of time possible. It engages all the major muscle groups and produces excellent aerobic fitness. It is also easy on the joints, and saves floor space in your home when compared to treadmills or elliptical machines.

Whatever your workout taste, the fitness world is your oyster at Fitness Solutions. If you’re a CrossFit junkie and want to extend your workout at home, they have rowers, rigs, racks, kettle bells, and more. If something like yoga is more your style, they’ve got everything you need in terms of mats, blocks, and straps. So if blasting those calories at home is your thing, get connected with Fitness Solutions and stay informed on current sales and promotions.

We Saskatonians are fortunate to get to experience the change in seasons and all the fun fitness options that are possible for us, both indoors and out. Whether you love getting out and experiencing group fitness or you prefer to create your perfect home gym, we hope you have fun supporting local businesses in the process!
